Bowls for all at Newport Indoor Bowls Centre
Bowls for All
Bowls really is a game for all, from 8 to 80 and beyond.
- It’s easy to learn and can be enjoyed at all levels of skill.
- It’s healthy but not strenuous exercise and one of the few sports where men and women can compete on the same level.
- It’s a social sport you will meet and make many friends whilst playing.
- It can be as competitive as you want – from a roll-up with friends to international events.
Taking it more seriously
When you find that bowls is for you, you will want to have your own equipment and the most important items are:
Shoes
Shoes must be regulation bowling shoes which have a flat sole to prevent damage to the bowling surface. These may be either brown or white.
Clothing
There is no dress code for playing on the public rinks, but you will want to wear comfortable clothing. The dress code for playing on the members’ rinks is white above the waist and grey below.
Bowls
Bowls come in different sizes, (numbered from 00 through 1 to 7), and weights, (medium, heavy and extra heavy, but the most important consideration is that they must be comfortable to hold. Most manufacturers make a variety of designs with different bias (the curved path taken by the bowl on its way to the jack). For use on indoor carpets bowls with a large bias should be avoided. By hiring different bowls from the centre you can see which type and size of bowl is best for you. Second hand bowls are often advertised on the Centre notice board; make sure you try before you buy.
Coaching
It is advisable to start with a coaching session to set you on the road to a good technique and success in bowls.Coaching is provided free of charge at the Sunday morning sessions and may be possible at other times by arrangement. Our coaches are all trained by the Welsh Bowls Coaching Association and can introduce you to the best approach to the game.
